Tier details

What’s in each tier

Every feature, every difference. Hover the ? next to a feature for a plain-English description.

Feature
Projects

PM-only. For shops with CAD/PDM elsewhere.

Standard

Documents + BOMs + changes for shops getting off shared drives.

Professional

Adds workflows + SolidWorks + Publisher Agent + air-gapped deployment.

Enterprise Coming soon

Adds MFA-required + AD/SSO + SOC 2 / CMMC docs — coming soon.

Documents + vault
Versioned documents
Check-in / check-out locking Only one person edits a document at a time. Subsequent users see who has the lock + can request a release. Prevents the 'two engineers overwrite each other' problem that plagues shared-drive workflows.
Watermarked PDFs Generated PDFs carry per-status watermarks (e.g. 'DRAFT', 'OBSOLETE') based on the document's current workflow state. Configurable per category.
Tokenized header / footer rendering Office documents stamp current document number, revision, status, and print date into headers / footers via tokens that auto-update on each open. No more 'manually update the rev block' stickies.
Audit log Every read, edit, approval, and admin action is recorded with actor + timestamp + before/after detail. Filterable + exportable. Required for CMMC / ISO audits.
Bills of materials
Multi-level BOMs
Where-used From any part, see every assembly + document that references it. One click. Critical for change-impact analysis.
Effectivity windows
Alternate / substitute parts
Change management
Change requests (ECR / ECO)
Configurable workflows Drag-and-build approval flows for documents, parts, and process changes. Per-step approver groups, escalation, conditional branching. Standard tier ships with a fixed default flow; Pro+ unlocks the editor.
Approver delegation + rotation
Locked history once issued
Project management
Schedule + Gantt + Timeline + Calendar views
Project templates Stage-gate templates with default tasks, durations, dependencies, gate reviews, and required deliverables. Spin up a new project from the template in 30 seconds. Standard ships with a default NPI template; Projects + Pro+ unlock the full editor. Default only
Baselines Snapshot the schedule + budget + scope at any point — typically at each gate. Baselines are immutable; the active plan can drift but baselines stay frozen so variance is measurable.
Gate reviews Configurable gates between phases with entrance + exit criteria, required deliverables, approver routing, and structured review records. Gate fail returns the project to the prior phase.
Risk register + heat map Track risks per project with probability × impact heat-mapping, owner, mitigation status. Risks roll up to portfolio-level dashboards.
Budget tab Per-project budget with planned-vs-actual roll-up across labor + capital + materials. Permission-gated so not everyone sees financials.
ROI projections Multi-year financial projections (revenue, cost, margin, NPV, payback period). Locked once a baseline is committed so the business case doesn't drift.
Reports tab (earned value, performance attribution) Schedule variance, earned value (CPI/SPI), per-user task performance attribution, status summaries — exportable. Built for the steering-committee deck. PM-only
Lessons-learned cross-project search Capture lessons at gate reviews + post-launch retrospectives, searchable across all projects so the next team doesn't repeat past mistakes.
Resource leveling + timesheets Track per-user effort against tasks; level over-allocated assignees across projects. Foundational PM features included even at the entry tier.
MS Project XML export
Linked to PLM data (documents, BOMs, changes) Pro+ tiers link tasks + gate deliverables to actual documents + BOMs + change requests in the vault. Projects tier is PM-only by design — for shops with CAD/PDM elsewhere — so this linking isn't included; you reference work via task descriptions instead.
Add-ins
Office add-in Word + Excel + PowerPoint plugin that lets users open vault documents, see token-rendered headers / footers with current revision + status, and check files back in without leaving Office.
SolidWorks add-in Native plugin for SolidWorks Pro / Premium. Check-in / check-out, assembly batch operations, property-mapping sync between SW custom properties and Thoma metadata. Phase 2 adds where-used queries from inside SolidWorks.
Property mapping (CAD ↔ Thoma)
Excel BOM live sync Future Phase 2 capability — keep an Excel BOM workbook in sync with the vault BOM. Roadmap, not yet shipped. Roadmap Roadmap
Publishing
Auto-publish converted artifacts When a part / document is checked in, the Publisher Agent (or in-process LibreOffice fallback) generates configured outputs (PDF, STEP, JT, DWG, etc.) and attaches them to the version automatically.
Publisher Agent fleet Distribute conversion work across multiple Windows boxes, each registered with its own capability set (e.g. 'this one has SolidWorks installed for STEP exports'). Admin UI manages the fleet + triages failures.
In-process LibreOffice fallback
Conversion-job retry + admin triage
Security + compliance
Per-category role-based permissions
Password complexity + history + age
Failed-login lockout
MFA (TOTP) Time-based one-time passwords via authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, 1Password, Authy, etc). Per-user enrollment with admin-issued recovery codes. Enterprise tier requires MFA org-wide; lower tiers leave it admin-optional. Optional Optional Optional Required
Active Directory / SSO (optional) Single Sign-On via Active Directory / SAML 2.0. Enterprise-only because most small shops don't run AD; for those that do, this is non-negotiable.
Air-gapped deployment Run Thoma without outbound network access. License activation handled offline (long-lived signed key, no mandatory heartbeat); updates applied via signed manifest the admin downloads + applies on a connected machine. Available on Professional and Enterprise — restricted-internet manufacturing shops don't need to upgrade to the compliance tier just to run offline.
Pre-update backup automation Before every Thoma update, automatically take a cold copy of the Postgres data + vault directory + TLS material. Standard / Pro can run this manually; Enterprise wires it into the auto-update flow.
SOC 2 / CMMC compliance documentation Auditor-friendly evidence packets + policies + the SOC 2 / CMMC Level-2 audit reports themselves. Enterprise-only because the underlying compliance program is what differentiates the tier.
AI Assistant
In-app AI assistant (chat) Conversational assistant aware of your documents/changes/projects/users + the Thoma user manual. Per-org opt-in by an admin via System Preferences (off by default). NOT available on Enterprise — see note below. Opt-in Opt-in Unavailable (CMMC L2)
Recent-context auto-injection When the assistant is enabled, every question rides with a snapshot of the user's top-N recent documents, changes, projects, tasks, users, categories, and named workflows so answers reference real data.
Help-corpus injection (10+ articles) Vendor-curated help corpus on common workflows (checkouts, signatures, workflows, audit log, etc.). Keyword-matched into the system prompt so 'how do I X' answers are real procedures, not guesses.
Configurable tone (Conversational / Reference) Admin chooses the assistant's response style per organization. Same corpus, different voice.
Per-organization chat history + admin review Every chat session is recorded for the org admin to review. Admins can disable a user's AI access at any time.
Vendor-paid with quotas (no surprise costs) Per-user-daily and per-organization-monthly token quotas keep AI cost bounded. Defaults sized for typical engineering-team usage.
Support
Documentation + knowledge base
Email support Response within 2 business days. Bug fixes prioritized into the next available release. Standard Standard Priority Priority
Priority email support Response within 4 business hours during US business days (8am-6pm Eastern). Critical issues (production down, data integrity) get a same-day response.
Onboarding call + scheduled support Enterprise customers get a guided setup call (typically 90 minutes) during install + monthly check-in calls during their first year.
EULA + procurement assistance

Universal seats

One seat per person, full read + write access to everything in your tier. The same seat works in the web app, the SolidWorks add-in, and the Office add-in — whichever surfaces are included in your tier. No per-product seat split. No viewer-vs-full split. One number to budget against.

For external reviewers, suppliers, or executives who only need to look and not edit, you can rotate them onto a regular seat as needed (each login is one seat in use; logged-out users free up their seat). Customers needing more dedicated read-only capacity at scale should contact Sales for a hybrid configuration.

Trial vs. paid

The 30-day free trial unlocks the full feature surface (excluding the Enterprise-tier compliance package) so you can evaluate end-to-end. Trial seat count is sized for typical evaluation team sizes; talk to Sales if you need more.

When you convert, pick the tier that matches your team’s actual needs. Most engineering shops land on Professional; regulated shops handling CUI on Enterprise.

Note: AI Assistant on Enterprise

The AI Assistant is intentionally unavailable on the Enterprise tier. Enterprise customers run Thoma in environments that need to satisfy CMMC Level 2 requirements for handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Sending data to a third-party LLM is incompatible with the data-handling restrictions CMMC L2 places on CUI environments — even per-org opt-in. Customers who don’t handle CUI but want enterprise features without the AI restriction should contact Sales to discuss a hybrid configuration.
